Senior Ashley Freestone’s artwork has been chosen to represent the Rockwood District Art Show, which will be held April 18-19, from noon-3:30 p.m. at St. Louis Community College-Wildwood. Lafayette Principal Dr. Calcaterra, Rockwood Coordinator Megan Meier, along with Freestone’s parents, surprised her during her 3rd hour graphic design class.
“I didn’t expect to win, it was definitely a surprise,” Freestone said. Graphic design teacher Liz Morningstar recognizes Freestone’s talent and compliments her drive as an art student.
“Ashley is a hard-working, motivated student. I was thrilled when she won, I thought she created a great poster,” Morningstar said.
The art show is driven by artists ranging from Pre-k to 12th-grade and this year there were 30 contestants that entered their art to potentially represent the art show.
“Winning skills include a creative and original design that follows the poster’s requirements,” Morningstar said. The requirement this year was color.
“I wanted to make something that represented a color wheel because it’s the basis for all artwork. I included red and pink, and then it transitions into purple and blue,” Freestone said.
As for pursuing a career in art, Freestone has yet to fully decide the path for her future but her hope, at least for today, is that everyone that sees her art piece, likes it and enjoys the art show as a whole.
