New Greenhouse up and running
November 14, 2016
Built last school year, the Lafayette High School greenhouse proudly stand on the western side of the school. Walking by the new structure, some notice that it looks abandoned and unused; however that is not true.
“The greenhouse is up and running now,” Principal John Shaughnessy said,
“FACS classes have been growing vegetables and herbs for their classes, and AP environmental students have been building and putting together the Hydroponic Growing Beds in the greenhouse. AP Biology classes have ordered supplies for growing plants, and will begin their work in there in November,” he said.
The greenhouse isn’t simply limited to science and FACS classes. Any class can use the building whenever they want to use it. Teachers are using the greenhouse to extend learning beyond classrooms and provide a hands-on learning experience for students.
“Most teachers meet with me ahead of time to discuss their intended use, and to see about purchasing supplies or using existing supplies,” Shaughnessy said.
Providing copious ways for students and staff to learn, the greenhouse is open for use.
“The idea of building a greenhouse supported our innovation initiative that supports real world applications of learning. It was a unique idea, and one that I felt would really add to our school,” Shaughnessy said.

[Families] actually having the opportunity to have their kids on the field with us is the most important aspect,” Ben Lundt said.](https://lancerfeed.press/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_6823-1200x800.jpg)
