Driver Ed students learn importance of safety ratings

Every semester students in Driver Education must complete a project where safety ratings of vehicles are compared. Then, each student must choose his or her perfect car which exemplifies the best safety rating and choice for insurance.

Sophomore Sarah Park is a permit driver learning new things due to the insurance project that will help her down the road.

“It taught me that there aren’t crash ratings on expensive cars. I was surprised because I thought that those cars would definitely have them. I guess those drivers just have to be super careful,” Park said.

Park chose a BMW as her winning choice due to its style but also for its decent crash and safety ratings.

“I chose the BMW because it was just right. I was originally going to choose an Audi, but that ratings didn’t work at all for me,” Park said.

With the help of Allstate Insurance, students are able to find a ballpark estimate of what their car would be and help narrow down the choice to one.

Looking ahead, Park knows that insurance will play a big role in her life.

“If you have to pay for the insurance, it’s really important to know about it. It will help me find a great car that fits me. But if your parents pay for your insurance, then you wont have to worry about everything as much,” Park said.

Insurance costs depend on certain factors, like age, make and model, amount of coverage given and bill payment history. All these aspects will keep Park aware of her future driving career.

“I haven’t gotten my license yet, but when I do, I will keep in mind everything that I learned even if it wasn’t that fun sometimes,” Park said.
