According to the Rockwood School District website, five classes will be offered through Rockwood Summer Acadamy including Health, Art Fundamentals, Personal Fitness and Wellness, Personal Finance (sophomore-senior students only) and Consumer Math. These courses are available only to students who haven’t taken the class before.
Art Fundamentals and Personal Fitness and Wellness will occur in person. The rest of the classes will be taken online through Canvas.
“It’s asynchronous, so if you want to work at midnight and do your 2-3 hours [of work], that’s fine,” Assistant Principal Tim Jones said.
Additionally, if students didn’t pass a class during the school year, they have the opportunity to retake the course during the summer to recover credit. Credit recovery happens in person but is taken through an online course.
“Even though the course is online, you have to come every day in person so we can make sure you finish the course by June [28],” Jones said.
Each course fulfills 0.5 credits and students can only get up to 1 credit per summer.
This year, the summer academy will be hosted at Marquette High School for both Lafayette students and Marquette Students. Additionally, the academy will be hosted at Rockwood Summit for both Eureka and Rockwood Summit students.
The academy runs from June 3-28, and there will be no school June 19. The day is divided into two sessions, Session 1 from 8-11:15 a.m. and Session 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Although registration is currently closed, students still have the opportunity to register for summer courses by talking with their counselor.
