Lancer teams enter final weeks of fall season

Weekly Sports Update: Oct. 10-17

Boys Cross Country: After winning the Parkway West Giddy Giddy Invitational on Oct. 10, the Lancers placed first out of 20 teams at the Eureka Invitational at McNair Park. In the varsity event, junior Mikolas Malek placed third, sophomore LJ Groenewald placed ninth, senior Vikas Devulapalli placed 14th and junior Bross Miller placed 18th.

Boys Soccer: Last week, the Lancers won all of their games, bringing their record to 5-4 overall. On Oct. 12, the team played an exciting match against Westminster. The game ended after overtime in penalty kicks, where the Lancers were able to grab the victory. The following night, Oct. 13, they took down Timberland 2-1, winning in penalty kicks again. Against Northwest on Oct. 15, the team won a decisive, 3-0.

Boys Swimming and Diving: On Oct.12, the Lancers beat Lindbergh, outscoring them 113-53. However, the following night, the Lancers lost a close match against District rival Marquette, 94-92. They came back from the loss though, beating Eureka by a score of 113-82. They have had to take their meets on the road due to a mold issue in the Lancer pool.

Field Hockey: The Lady Lancers took their first loss of the season, against perennial rival MICDS, 3-0 on Oct. 12. They lost again on Oct. 14, against an undefeated Villa Duchesne squad, 2-0. However, in their last game of the regular season, the Lady Lancers bounced ack and trounced Rockwood Summit, 5-0 on Oct. 15.

Football: In their third game of the season, the Lancers beat Parkway Central 40-7 on the road Oct. 12. Senior Blake Micek threw for four touchdowns in the game, passing for a total of 301 yards. Senior Mitchel Hoffman led the Lancers in rushing, with 60 yards on the night while senior Pernell Garner led the team with receiving yards, gaining 115.

Girls Cross Country: Gaining yet another win under their belt, the Lady Lancers placed first out of 20 teams at the Eureka Invitational at McNair Park on Oct. 17. This is the team’s fifth race and fifth win of the season. Sophomore Grace Tyson placed first, senior Hope Ware placed second, sophomore Elissa Barnard placed third and senior Katie Reed placed tenth in the race.

Girls Golf: At the District Tournament on Oct. 12, the team placed second overall and advanced four players to the State tournament taking place Oct. 19 and 20. Senior Brooke Biermann was the District champ, shooting a 75 on the course. Juniors Caroline Boyette and Grace Stafford qualified as well, along with senior Kate Worley.

Girls Tennis: Despite the team losing in District Sectionals 5-1 against John Burroughs on Oct. 12, several Lady Lancers played in the individual and doubles tournament at the State level. Junior Trisha Kosaruju lost in her match, but earned an All-State title for singles. Seniors Erin Reynolds and Emma Tobin secured All-State status as well in the doubles tournament.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Lancers experienced their first loss of the season on Oct. 13, falling to St. Francis Borgia, 3-1. The team came back on the following night, defeating Seckman by the same score. But the big event of the week was the highly anticipated match against rival Eureka. Last year, the Lady Lancers eliminated the Wildcats from a chance to repeat as State Champions and instead went on themselves to State and a second place overall finish. On Oct. 15, the Lady Lancers traveled down 109 to face Eureka. The contest went the distance as the teams battled back and forth in five close games. The Lancers went up one game 25-16 before Eureka battled back taking the next two 22-25, 23-25. Then the Lady Lancers tied things up in a 25-19 game leading to the fifth and deciding 15-11 gam. In all the match lasted over two hours.

Softball: In their last game of the regular season on Oct. 12, the team defeated Northwest, 7-0, beating them for the second time this season. After earning the second seed in the District tournament, the team beat Kirkwood on Oct. 14,  9-1. However, they lost to District rival Marquette, 6-0, on Oct. 14, ending the season in the second round of the tournament.
