Weekly sports update: Oct. 14-Oct. 21

Boys Cross Country: As a team, the boys cross country team placed third at the District Meet on Oct. 20 at Francis Park. Senior Harrison Brown finished second while running a new personal best and covering the five kilometer course in 15:37. Junior Aiden Murphy and senior John Nicholson finished close behind Brown by placing eighth and sixteenth, respectively. With a team placement in the top four, the boys advance to the next race of the State series, the Sectional Meet,  on Oct. 27 at Big Driver Golf Course in Washington, Missouri. If the boys place in the top four as a team at the Sectional Meet, they will advance to the State Championship Meet in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Boys Soccer: The boys soccer team fell to Eureka on Oct. 16, 1-2. Senior Cade Fladda scored Lafayette’s only goal. Lafayette will play at Rockwood Summit on Oct. 23. Then they will host MICDS on Oct. 24, followed by Ladue on Oct. 25.

Boys Swimming: The boys swim team finished fifth out of 24 teams at the Springfield Invitational Meet. Senior Ben Brim placed fourth in the 200-meter Individual Medley, senior Josh Moellenhoff placed fourth in the 100-meter breathstroke and senior Jacob Hepper finished first in the 100-meter backstroke.

Field Hockey:  The Lady Lancers finished their regular season with a win against Edwardsville on Oct. 19. The girls finished the regular season with a record of 12-8. Sophomore Mia Simpson finished the season with 13 goals and 32 points, and on Oct. 18, she was named the Schnucks High School Athlete of the Week. The girls’ next game will be in the District Tournament, but the date and time of the game has yet to be announced. 

Football: The football team ended their regular season with a 0-35 loss to Marquette. Their record is now 3-5, and they will travel to Kirkwood on Oct. 26 to take on the Pioneers in the first round of the District Tournament. 

Girls Cross Country: The girls cross country team’s season came to an end on Oct. 20 at the District Meet at Francis Park. As a team, the girls placed seventh, but senior Anna Karner qualified for the Sectional Meet on Oct. 27 at Big Driver Golf Course in Washington, Missouri by placing third individually and running a new personal best of 18:57. Sophomore Kesley Johnson also qualified for the Sectional Meet by placing 27th.

Girls Golf: On Oct. 15, sophomore Brooke Biermann ended the season by earning 2nd place in the Missouri State High School Athletic Association’s (MSHSAA) girls golf State Championship in Kansas City, Missouri with the second lowest 18-hole score of -1 par. 

During the Sept. 5 tennis match against Ladue, freshman Katie Ferguson prepares to return a serve back to her opponent. Ferguson won the match, and on Oct. 20, she finished her first season at LHS with a fourth place State finish.

Girls Tennis: Although the girls tennis team did not advance to the State Tournament as a team, junior Erin Davis and freshman Katie Ferguson advanced in the State singles tournament. On Oct. 19, Davis fell to Corrine Farid from Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Also in the quarterfinals, Ferguson defeated last year’s third place State finisher, Ella Kinder, from Rockwood Summit; however, in the semi-finals, Ferguson fell to Eva Kresovic from Park Hill South. Ferguson finished fourth at State while Davis finished seventh.

Girls Volleyball: The girls volleyball team ended their regular season with a 26-5-1 record after defeating Nerinx Hall on Oct. 16 and Francis Howell on Oct. 18. In the win against Nerinx Hall, senior Staciana Stock had 12 kills and junior Allison Beaton contributed with 9 kills. The Lady Lancers will begin play in the District Tournament on Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. at Parkway South. They will play the winner of the Parkway Central versus Parkway South game on Oct. 22. If the Lady Lancers win at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, they will play at 7 p.m. for the District Championship title.
