Its been a rough start for the Lafayette boys basketball team. After winning their first game, the team went on to lose five straight games and was sitting at a dismal 1-5 record. But, the team has pulled it together and won three of their last five.

Before the Holiday Tournament, the Lancers traveled to Holt High School to battle the Indians in an effort to snap their five game losing streak. The game came down to the last play, literally. Steve Pennington, who hadn’t scored a single point the entire game and had already missed two shots in the game, nailed the game winning three pointer after Adam Flinn threw a bullet pass to Pennington who then proceeded to drain the game-winner. Lafayette won the game 46-45 and improved to 2-5 on the season. Flinn led the team with 16 points and Andre Roberts added another 11.

After the thriller at Holt, the Lancers would play four games in the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament and were given a 16 seed. The team went 2-2 in the tournament and ultimately came in eighth place. Lafayette beat Kirkwood and Eureka, who were a eight and 13 seed, but lost to St. Mary’s and Jennings who were a one and six seed, respectively. The team had its ups and downs, but had a solid outing in the tournament and improved their overall record to 4-7.

Some notable performances during the tournament: Kory Brubaker vs. St. Mary’s scored 14 points, collected three rebounds and dished out one assist; Flinn vs. Kirkwood scored 17 points and led the team to a 61-49 victory; Flinn vs. Eureka put up 14 points and shot a perfect 4-4 at the line; and Flinn vs. Jennings scored 22 points, but the Lancers fell just short and lost 62-57.

Despite early struggles, Flinn has turned things around and put up great numbers. He has scored 155 points, is averaging 14.1 points per game and is shooting 55.6 percent from the field. Flinn is also leading the team in rebounds, 38, assists, 29, and steals, 10.

The teams next game is against McCluer (6-4) who has won three straight. The game is at home on Jan. 4 starting at 7 p.m.
