Wrestling starts off strong; living up to expectations

Jackson Bartholomew, Sports Reporter

Last year, the Lafayette wrestling team had it’s best finish in school history, taking fifth at State. The team also had five State medalists in their respective weight classes. With that being said, four of the five of those medalists graduated leaving a gaping hole in the starting lineup. However, they have gone perfect so far this season winning the Parkway South Tournament, and duels at Timberland and Fox.

Before the season, Head Coach Jon Sumner was quoted as saying “I think we have a bunch of kids who are still hungry from last year’s finish and have high expectations for themselves, and we as coaches have high expectations for them as well. We have the same expectations that we do every year and expect to do well.” It seems as though this message has resonated with the team so far this season.

The squad has put themselves to be successful not only right now, but for the rest of the season. They are wrestling tough and winning matches up and down the board, and look poised to continue their dominance going through the season. See them in action next Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Mehlville High School. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m.
