Instead of getting ready for winter break this season, Student Council executive board members sought out brightening up the days of students. Members handed out anything from a candy bar, to a signed picture of a favorite teacher, to a new dog.

Student Council handed out these “winter wishes” to those students who turned in their wish on Dec. 5-7. success.

This is the first year STUCO has done a Winter Wishes campaign and they believe it was a huge success.

The idea for winter wishes came from Kennedy Plant, senior, who, upon pitching the idea, received loads of support from the rest of STUCO. Gifts like stuffed dogs, chocolate, flowers and more were handed out to students at the beginning of each class hour. Superintendent Eric Knost even showed up to answer a student’s wish for a selfie with him.

Oddly enough, one of the more highly requested wishes that students placed were for teachers to deliver presents to them. Following one lucky student’s wish, world language teacher John Becker serenaded one of his students.

Though most wishes were easily granted, there were a few tricky wishes to be granted.

“We normally tried to work around the wishes that were hard to grant,” STUCO President Marlo McElroy said. “We had someone who wished for a boyfriend, so we gave her a Ken Barbie doll. Another example was someone who wished for a moose, so in return we granted the student the hair product mousse instead,” McElroy said.

When asked about her favorite wish that was granted this season, she said it was “delivering a rotisserie chicken to industrial technology teacher Mark McAlister during 5th Hour.”

The wish was finally granted when over seven students turned in the request for the teacher as their winter wish.

At the end of the week, STUCO had granted over 100 wishes and brought plenty of smiles throughout the halls of Lafayette.
