Halfway through the season, the Lafayette girls lacrosse team sits in second place in the conference standings behind Kirkwood (10-1), who is in first place, and Marquette (12-2), who is in second. Lafayette has a record of 9-2-1 thanks to multiple winning-streaks and great team chemistry.
“Our key to success has been winning the draw and maintaining possession of the ball for most of the game,” head coach Carrie Guenzler-Heaney said. “After winning the draw, being patient and methodical on offense, in order to create good scoring opportunities, has allowed us to control the pace of the game and keep the clock on our side.”
Senior captain Maria Johnson is currently leading the Lady Lancers in goals with 52, while Paige Miller stands in second with 19. Johnson is also tied for fourth in the St. Louis area for points at 64.
“Maria is our primary draw-taker, so she has been integral in the key to our success,” Guenzler-Heaney said. “She has always been a powerful attack player below the 30-meter, but this year it is her winning of draws and keeping the ball safe on transition that has proved so integral to the strategy and success of the team.”
The team’s next game is set for April 27 against Westminister (9-5) at home starting at 6 p.m.
