Despite struggles Lady Lancers look to improve
February 3, 2016
It’s been a rough going for the girls varsity basketball team this year so far as they sit with a current record of 7-11.
They haven’t had a winning record since week one of the season when they beat Fort Zumwalt West 53-49. Since then the team hasn’t had any back-to-back wins and has gone on multiple losing streaks.
But despite the struggles this season, head coach David Witter is looking on the bright side.
“We have to continue to build on our positive effort we’ve given each and every night throughout the season,” Witter said. “If this team can minimize unforced errors in our remaining schedule, our opportunity for competitive success will increase significantly.”
The team has a chance to turn the season around if they can pile up a winning-streak. They’re already off to a good start with a 56-41 win over Oakville on Feb. 2 and they can build on that if they can get production from their seniors Tayler Dent, Maria Johnson, Jenny Kohl and Shelby Robbe.
Johnson in particular has risen up above the rest and taken the role of leadership for the team. She has scored 180 points so far this season and averages 11.3 points per game. She is also dominating the glass with 95 rebounds and six blocks.
“Maria has had a very positive season as a senior as well as Tayler, Jenny and Shelby as senior leaders. Statistically Maria is leading us in points per game and other categories, but her emergence in a leadership role has been her most significant contribution this year.” Witter said.
The Lady Lancers next game is scheduled for Feb. 5 against Lindbergh at home starting at 5:30 p.m.

[Families] actually having the opportunity to have their kids on the field with us is the most important aspect,” Ben Lundt said.](https://lancerfeed.press/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_6823-1200x800.jpg)
