With a 3-12 record, it’s no secret that the water polo team is struggling. The team has been getting good individual performances from many of the players, most notably Josh Alwood, Theuns Gerber and Matt Graves, but the team as a whole is struggling to win. Several of the teams losses have been blowouts against stellar teams like SLUH and Marquette, who have a combined three losses over 21 games. However, some other losses were heart breakers, like the two close losses to MICDS and the losses to CBC and Whitney-Young. These were all games that were decided by two or three goals and against teams with similar records at the time.

We try not to blame each other because I know this is a team sport.

— Josh Alwood

Tied for the team’s lead in assists with ten, Josh Alwood is having a solid statistical season, but also acknowledges that the sport is still ultimately a team game. He said, “We try not to blame each other because I know this is a team sport. It’s not an individual sport like swim or any other sport where it’s only about yourself. It’s kind of hard for us to make sure we all work together and not blame each other.”

One of the possible causes of the teams struggles may have been the the addition of many new members and call-ups this year. The influx of newer players may have caused a problem with team chemistry, but the future is looking brighter as the Lancers won their most recent game against John Burroughs 10-5.

The team plays several games in quick succession, ending with their tournament game against Marquette at John Burroughs on April 16 at 1:15 p.m.
