Lafayette hasn’t lost a game since April 16, in over a month. In that span, they have improved their record to 33-3 and have yet to drop a single set since their last loss. They have also climbed the rankings to become the first ranked team in the stlhighschoolsports.com ranking (per this article).

They are also the second ranked team (according to www.maxpreps.com) in the state behind SLUH, a team that the Lancers have gone 1-1 with and was their most recent loss.

The team won their most recent game against Francis Howell in two sets: 25-19 and 25-22. In the first set, the two teams were deadlocked until the score was 14-14. The Lancers went on a 6-2 run and never looked back, leading the rest of the set by no less than three.

In the second set, the Lancers found themselves down 15-13, but Alex Gettinger and Nick Lavanchy helped to lead the team back and ultimately win the set.

Despite being down in the set, the Lancers never lost their winning mentality.

“You don’t ever go into a set thinking you’re going to lose, and as you get deeper in the set and get down you gotta fight through the points, fight through whatever errors you went through earlier, keep the ball in play and put the ball down when you get the chance,” Gettinger said.

The Lancers face DeSmet in the next round. DeSmet is a team that has finally broken their quarterfinals losing streak of years past, but also they have already lost to the Lancers once this year.

Since the last time the two teams have faced, a few things have changed. Previously, DeSmet did not have their best middle hitter, giving a change in the roster that the Lancers last faced. In addition, since their last match on April 8, both teams have improved, and both teams have won several more key games.

The game is on Thursday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m at Lindenwood.
