Varsity wrestling places third overall at Winnetonka
January 26, 2015
The Winnetonka Invitional Tournament is known for being a tough competition. Some of the top wrestling talent in the State is invited to compete down at the Kansas City-based high school, and for some teams, it may be the most important tournament of their season.
None of this seemed to have phased the Lancers.
After a hard-fought weekend, the varsity wrestling squad came home with the bronze, placing third overall in the tournament.
In an impressive individual effort, the Lancers had 13 wrestlers place in the top 10 of each of their respective weight classes, with senior Jason Carson and junior Tim Bogar placing second in the 126 and 138 weight classes, respectively.
“We almost had second place. [Jason] Carson was defeated with five seconds left, and it knocked us down to third” Junior Brendan McKenna said.
The team also believes that their placement at Winnetonka is a sign of things to come for their postseason performance.
“We have a good shot at getting a plaque at State” McKenna said.
The next upcoming event for the Lancers is the Thrasher Tournament held at Francis Howell High School. This will be another test for the squad, as some tough teams, such as district rival Marquette and Northwest, will be present. How the Lancers fare in this tournament should be a sign as to how they fare in the postseason.
