On Tuesday, May 5, the varsity girls soccer team matched up against Northwest Cedar Hill in honor of their teammate Avery Cantor, who passed away last year.

Before the game, a special ceremony was held for Cantor. Fans and teammates released balloons together and they announced her name in the starting lineup. Since it was a special event for the team, attendance was a lot higher than their usual games, as many showed out to support the team.

Sophomore goalie Tayler Hensley said, “We were all driven and felt like we had a strong purpose to be on the field. We gave Avery’s mom a signed soccer and she gave a speech saying that her daughter would be so proud.”

Emotions were heavy after the opening ceremony, but the Lancers felt like they had a great chance going into the game with momentum on their side. Compiling a 10-5 record before they went in the game, Lafayette was in great shape to put up a good fight.

Momentum proved to be valuable, as they jumped out with the lead, scoring the first goal of the contest. In the first half they scored two goals, followed by three in the second. The rest of the game their defense was rock solid with their defense stopping any attempt of offensive pressure. The final score of the game was 5-0.

Senior Taylor Schneider was big time, scoring two goals and passing for a pair of assists.

With the season winding down, the Lancers record will be strong enough for a competitive postseason bid. Their next game is against Lindbergh May 7 at 7 p.m.

The Lancers will look to continue their good fortune and extend their winning streak to five games.
