Lancers off to a strong start at Districts

The Lafayette Lancers opened the district tournament at home against the Blue Jays of Washington High School on Thursday night. The Lancers immediately jumped out to a 12-0 start, holding a 16-point lead by the end of the first quarter, and by halftime the Lancers had stretched their lead to 25. The Lancers continued to dominate through the second half, eventually winning by a landslide, 66-36.

The game was a relatively easy one for the Lancers.

“I thought it was a good game,” senior Sam Charlton said. “I thought we came out right away and we came out firing.”

Head coach Scott Allen agreed.

“I think we played well,we shot the ball well too,” Allen said. “Great energy on the court. Overall, I’m very pleased with last nights game.”

The Lancers will face the Parkway Central Colts for the District Championship on Friday, March 6 at 7:30 pm at Washington High School. Parkway Central’s team, and especially senior Jarrett Cox-Bradley, who is averaging 25.6 points per game, will be a challenge for the Lancers.

“We don’t get a lot of preparation for them since we played last night,” Allen said. “But I think if we come out tonight and just do what we have been doing all year long then I think we will be fine.”

If the Lancers beat the Colts, they will likely face the basketball powerhouse of Chaminade and their small forward, 6’8″ junior Jayson Tatum, the number one basketball recruit in America.

“If we face them, we’ll probably have Justin Zadoks guard him [Tatum],” said Charlton. “We might have to bring some random double teams. We can’t let him get in the paint.”

Winning a District championship can be difficult, but if the Lancers continue riding on their momentum, Friday’s game should be an interesting one to watch.
