Varsity boys soccer hopes to start off season strong

The fall season is here, and boys soccer is back. After a soul crushing defeat in double overtime last year to their in-district rival Eureka, the squad looks to begin their season on the right track.

Senior Goalkeeper Brendan Carnahan said, “We didn’t really lose any big players, so we should probably make it to District finals.”

However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any issues that need to be worked out

Carnahan said, “We don’t really have any true goalscorers this year, but our movement in the midfield is definitely a lot better.”

The team starts off their season on the road at the Northwest/Parkway Varsity Tournament. This allows the Lancers, as well as several other schools, to make a statement during the beginning of the season. There may even be a few surprises sprinkled in.

“Every once in awhile, you get some good teams who end up doing bad, and bad ones who end up doing well, so it’s always interesting every year” Carnahan said.

But the upcoming tournament isn’t the only set of games that Lancers have to worry about. Their schedule is filled with some tough matches, including the annual bouts against in-district rivals Eureka and Marquette.

As far as players, Carnahan believes that the Junior class will really make a name for themselves, saying “Guys like Matt Scharf and Chris Roggenberg should be a big help.”

The first game of the Northwest/Parkway tournament for the Lancers, as well their first game of the season, begins on Aug. 23 at 12:00 p.m. against Francis Howell North at Parkway West.
