Lafayette knocks off Marquette and Northwest, advance to Oakville

Over the last two weeks, the varsity Lafayette football team has gone undefeated. After a 28-18 win on their conference rival Marquette Mustangs home turf, they continued their success the following Friday against the Northwest Lions.

In the first matchup, Lafayette’s senior Kevin Hampton got on the board quickly as he scored a 40 yard touchdown for the first score of the game. Senior quarterback Evan Scales also finished the game rushing 85 yards.

Marquette proceeded to fall behind 14-0 but the Mustangs quarterback, Austin Powers, threw to Jacobi Boykin and John Whitworth for significant gains. Powers finished with for 160 yards, throwing for a touchdown and rushing 38 yards for another one.

After Powers ran for the touchdown, the score was 21-16. Trying to shorten Lafayette’s lead to a field goal, the Mustangs attempted a two-point conversion. Powers fired a short pass to Whitworth for the conversion.

With the score at 21-18, Lafayette answered quickly when Scales found senior Tyler McMurray for a 23 yard touchdown, to put the score at 28-18. Lafayette’s defense prevailed as they stopped the ball on Marquette’s ensuing possession.

Last Friday, against Northwest, more success appeared to arise from Lafayette. Scales ran for a touchdown while throwing for another two; Hampton also rushed for an astounding 212 yards and scored two touchdowns. After holding the Lions to a single score each half, the final was 40-14.

Lafayette’s record increased to 3-1 after both of the wins. Next Friday, the Lancers will be the visitors as they look to keep the balling rolling against the Oakville Tigers (2-2). The game begins at 7pm. Kevin Hampton is expected to perform well, after Eureka posted 386 yards rushing in their 37-12 win over Oakville last week.
