After tough loss to Eureka, Lafayette looks to regroup

The Lancers faced the Eureka Wildcats for their annual “Battle of 109” varsity football game. Although ending in a 25-31 loss at Eureka, the game captured both the heart and soul of the Rockwood School District as a moment of silence was held prior to the game to remember the tragic loss of recent Eureka graduate, Lauren Oliver and her younger sister, senior, Kathleen Oliver.

During a tragic time for the Eureka community, the Wildcats football team seemed to come together last Friday night. After a memorial ceremony before the game along with a moment of silence, it was time to begin the highly anticipated matchup.

Lafayette won the toss and elected to receive the football. On the first play, their Suburban West Conference rival Eureka, got off on a bad foot and was called for a penalty. Things continued to look bleak for the Wildcats as they fumbled and were intercepted twice on their first two possessions. However, the Lancers struggled on offense as well, until Evan Scales made a 7-yard completion to receiver Corey Manne for their first touchdown.

Two minutes into the second quarter, Scales hit Devin Hampton for a 68-yard touchdown run, but failed to receive the extra point. Later in the game, Kevin Hampton scored Lafayette’s third and final touchdown.

With the score at 13-0, Eureka’s Adam Yancey and Brett Geisz rushed for a combined 199 yards and racked up five total touchdowns as Eureka stormed past the Lancers. After a rough second half, Eureka finished up with 35 points compared to the Lancer’s 21.

Despite the loss to Eureka, the season is still far from over. On Sept. 6, Lafayette will have to take on the Pattonville Pirates. The game will be fought on the Lancers home turf, and will begin at 7:00pm. Admission will be $5 per student.
