On Friday, Samuel L. Jackson hosted the tenth anniversary of the annual Spike Video Game Awards show. Guests included Jack Black and Kyle Gass (who later played a song from the most recent Tenacious D album “Rize of the Fenix”), Jessica Alba, Johnny Galecki, Zachary Levi, Marlon Wayans, Snoop Lion, Camilla Luddington, and many more.
The Walking Dead: The Game won a number of awards, including Game of the Year, Best Adapted Video Game, Best Performance by a Human Female for Melissa Hutchinson as Clementine, and Best Downloadable Game, and Telltale Games (the developers of the game) were awarded Studio of the Year. Other games in the running for Game of the Year were Mass Effect 3, Journey, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Dishonored. This marks the first time in the award show’s history that a download-only game (at least until it releases in retail on Dec. 11) not only had the chance to win Game of the Year, but did.
Just following The Walking Dead in number of awards was Borderlands 2, which received Best Shooter, Best Multiplayer, Best Performance by a Human Male for Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack, and the Player’s Choice for Character of the Year with Claptrap. Gearbox Studio was also up for Studio of the Year, but did not take home the award.
The other underdog, Journey, tied Borderlands 2 for the second highest number of awards, receiving Best Independent Game, Best PS3 Game, Best Original Score, and Best Musical Score. The distinction between the last two awards was not made very clear.
Halo 4 received Best Graphics and Best Xbox 360 and Dishonored received Best Action/Adventure Game over Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders 2, and Assassin’s Creed 3.
The only other award that was actually presented during the show was for Game of the Decade, which went to Half-Life 2. Other candidates included, but were not limited to, Shadow of the Colossus, Red Dead Redemption, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.
As for the awards that weren’t announced on air but were still awarded, Best RPG went to Mass Effect 3, Best Individual Sports Game went to SSX, Best Driving Game went to Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Best Song went to “Cities” by Beck from Sound Shapes, Best Fighting Game went to Persona 4: Arena, Best Team Sports Game Went to NBA 2K13, Best Handheld/Mobile Game went to Sound Shapes, Best DLC went to the Dawnguard expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and the Most Anticipated Game as voted on by viewers was Grand Theft Auto V.
