Students show colors for Connecticut

On Friday December 14, 26 people, including 20 children, were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, CT. This act has left people all over America in dismay.

In honor of the lives taken at the tragic event, students at Lafayette and across the country wore green and white, Sandy Hook’s school colors, or blue and yellow, Newtown High’s school colors on Monday, December 17.

Freshman McKayla Rogan, wore the school’s colors and was glad to see other students participating. She has relatives living near where the incident occurred.

“It’s good to know that people are supporting those who lost family members. My cousins live close to where the shooting occurred and I couldn’t imagine if something happened to them,” said Rogan.

Other students, such as senior Tyler Williams, believe in the support the families who lost someone in the shooting. But, politics should not get involved this soon.

“I’m just very mournful about it. I don’t feel like it needs to push a hand on political debates. We just need to pray for the families and respect of those who died and are mourning their losses,” said Williams.

Most students are too shocked to focus on any political views concerning tragedy. Sophomore Courtney Trube and many others are trying to fully comprehend, accept and prevent any further events similar to the occurrence at Sandy Hook Elementary.

“I think everyone should be aware of what happened and support those families that lost loved ones. What happened is horrible and scary. People need to know that this was a huge tragedy. They’re just kids and they haven’t even lived at all yet. I can’t imagine how the parents feel. Not having your kid comes home from school because they were killed? We need to do something to make sure this cannot happen ever again,” said Trube.
