Thespians put a twist on performances

Once a year, the theater program strays from the norm.  Rather than putting on a student-performed, teacher-directed play, Thespians perform student-directed One Acts.

“A 0ne act is a whole play, only it’s put into one act, instead of two or three like a full length play,” junior Tommy Rudd said.

Senior Jessica Cohen, who is a directing as well as performing in multiple one acts, said, “Tthey’re about 30 minutes long, and they’re student directed.  This year, they’re being [directed] by seniors.”

Senior directors are given the opportunity to work with students in a different way. Students who have acted together their entire high school career are now able to put their experience in action.

“You know how they work in terms of how they perform and what they need, and they know what you expect,” Cohen said.

“It’s fun to work with students because you learn so much; there are so many details that you don’t think about,” senior Megan Hassenmueller said. “It’s a good life experience,” she added.

Rudd sees the one acts as a method for everyone to be involved in a way they’re not familiar with. Rudd, who is usually one to be found on-stage, is testing the waters as a stage manager.

“[One acts] give everybody a different kind of experience. I would never have expected to be stage manger.”

The one acts are split up; half will be performed on Thursday, April 15, and the other half will be performed on Friday, April 16.

Both performances will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 each.
