NHS induction ceremony provides inductees with look to the future

As is customary at the end of the year, the Lafayette chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) inducted its new members on May 8.

The inductees had to go through an extensive application process which included writing an essay, providing school related and out of school recommendations and finally the completion of a packet detailing the applicants activity in several categories including leadership, extra-curriculars, community service and work experience.

The students applications were then assessed and scored, with those earning a high enough total application score being accepted.

The induction ceremony introduced those chosen students to their future in NHS through descriptions of each cardinal principle of NHS.

Each description was provided by one of the five Senior Executive Officers of NHS and after each, a candle was lit signifying its place in NHS with Alex Creely describing scholarship, Taylor Foley describing service, Varun Mehrotra describing leadership and Caitlyn Rumsey describing character.

Senior Executive Officer Elizabeth Worley also depicted the motto of NHS, “Noblesse Oblige,” meaning nobility obligates and described the emblem of NHS, both of which provide the ideals of the society.

The mission statement of the Lafayette branch was also presented to the audience.

It reads, “We, the Lafayette High School Chapter of the National Honor Society pledge to maintain academic excellence and outstanding character while exercising leadership skills to better serve our community.”

Afterwards, the students including 15 seniors, 41 juniors and 42 sophomores were formally inducted with a candlelit oath and then were presented one by one to the audience of their family and friends.

The ceremony concluded with a few heart felt words from sponsor AnnMarie Gilman and cake and refreshments.
