Outstanding season comes to an end for girls lacrosse
May 20, 2016
After an 11-8 loss to Cor Jesu on May 16, the Lady Lancers lacrosse team ended the season with a 18-3-1 record, the best since the 1999-2000 season.
Cor Jesu has become a problem for Lafayette as they have had recent success against the Lady Lancers after beating them last year on the same date as this year, May 16.
Despite being knocked out by the Chargers again, the team had resounding success this year and had some premier players as well. One of those players being Maria Johnson who scored 113 goals which puts her in first for goals scored in the St. Louis area. Also, Taryn Brewer had a phenomenal season with a 18-2-1 record as the goalie for Lafayette.
“Most of the girls on this year’s team have put a lot of time into the off-season to improve their game year around,” head coach Carrie Guenzler said. “On a daily basis, our very young, enthusiastic team worked hard at practices with a sense of self-motivation and regulation that I haven’t before had the privilege to see.”
The team had six seniors out of 21 players this year. Among those were Ellie Alicea, Maria Johnson, Raina Kabra, Maggie McDaniel, Aubrey McRae and Shelby Robbe. Although the Lady Lancers will lose a talented group of seniors, there are 9 juniors and a handful of sophomores with varsity experience already that are ready to pick up where the team left off this year.
“Although we lost to Cor Jesu, I believe we were all very confident in our ability to capture a State Championship. Unfortunately we, the second ranked team, had to play the first ranked team in just the second of five rounds of playoffs, hence our loss. But, we still know that we are a top state contender and are proud of the amazing regular season we’ve just put in the books,” Guenzler said.
Be sure to follow up with the Lafayette girls lacrosse team next year as they are set to have another solid season.
