Water polo off to a hot start

It seems like nobody can stop the Lafayette water polo squad.

The team is off to a 10-1-1 start. No, that is not a typo; the Lancer’s season opener against McHenry High School, a school from the Chicago suburbs, at a tournament in Schaumburg, Illinois, ended in a 7-7 tie. After the unusual outcome in the first game, Lafayette dominated their opponents, winning five of their last seven games by more than 10 points.

“So far the season’s going really well, its the best varsity season we’ve had in a couple of years,” said senior Michael Wiles. “We started off strong at the Schaumburg [IL] tournament, taking second place in a tournament there and we recently won one at Pattonville.”

Success hasn’t come easy to the Lancers this season. At the Schaumburg tournament, after opening with a tie to McHenry, the Lancers won two nail-biters to advance to the championship round, where they lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to the Saxons of Schaumburg High School, another school from suburban Chicago.

“So far our hardest opponent has been MICDS, especially when we played them twice in one day  in the Pattonville tournament, the second match to take first place, but we overcame, we adjusted and adapted and we beat them for the second time that day,” Wiles said.

In spite of their initial success, the Lancers still have a long season ahead and many more tough opponents to face.

“Our toughest competition will be SLUH and Parkway West, SLUH has been one of the top teams in the state the last couple of years, but hopefully we can beat them,” said Wiles.

Even with this tough upcoming competition, the Lancers pool squad expects their success to continue.

“I think the rest of the season will go pretty well if we just keep doing what we’re doing, passing and communicating and working together, if we can keep that up I think the season will go pretty well,” said Wiles.

The Lancers start a new tournament at Parkway South tonight against Parkway North at 5:45 p.m.
