Girls soccer overcomes rocky start

The Lancers girls soccer team is off to a slow start this year. They lost their season opener to the Jaguars of Fort Zumwalt West when, after the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation, the Jaguars scored the go-ahead goal in overtime to bring the score to 2-1. The Lancers were unable to respond and lost the game 2-1.

The Lancers lost another close game in their rivalry match against the Eureka Wildcats. Just four minutes after halftime, Eureka senior forward Abby Pulliam scored a fluke goal after she saved a ball that the rest of the players had assumed was out of bounds and kicked it in to give Eureka the lead. The Lancers were again unable to come back and lost 1-0.

The Lady Lancers finally got their first win of the season in their home opener against Hazelwood West on Wednesday. The teams scored a goal each in the first half, but the Lancers pulled away in the second half with two additional goals. The Lancers won the match 3-1, with seniors Emma Enright and Jordan Wipke and sophomore Millie Schofield scoring the Lancers three goals and junior Grace Breiten and sophomore Jessica Smith each providing an assist.

The Lancers goalie, sophomore Taylor Hensley, says she is unconcerned with the teams early struggles because “its still early on in the season.”

“We didn’t start off great, but we’re getting through it,” Hensley said. “I think it just going to get better from here.”

The Lancers next game is at  Parkway South on Tuesday at 5:30.
