On Monday, March 3 the Lafayette Hockey team took on Rockwood Summit at 5:30 p.m. downtown at Scotttrade Center for the Mid-States Club Hockey Association’s Wickenheiser Cup championship.  The Lancers suffered a disappointing 5-2 defeat against the favorite Falcons.

To start the game off on a high note, senior Kyle Estes scored within the first 30 seconds, making his shot off a rebound from Dominic Caito. The second goal of the night came from freshman Jared Preete.

Although it was a disappointing loss, the Lancers were proud that they made it. According to stlhighschoolsports.com, coach Lindsay Middlebrooks said, “We never stopped battling. There is disappointment, but I’m still pretty proud they got here, But just to play here and be on this rink in front of a crowd, that’s what it’s all about.”

The Lancer crowd could be found in “gold rush” attire, wearing shirts designed by senior Andrew Marsh (who played Lancer hockey himself as an underclassman).

With a team led by a majority of underclassmen, this was an experience that the team will never forget and hopefully use to push them for next season to reach it again.

The seniors were able to end their final season with a bittersweet experience.

“It was an awesome 4 years and great way to end high school hockey,” senior Jake Robbe said.
