Girls swimming falls short at State

After a successful season and Conference Championship, the Lady Lancer girls swimming team was unable to finish strong in State competition at the St. Peter’s Rec Plex last weekend, Feb. 21-22.

The team finished 10th overall with 94 points. Individually, senior Mae Riordan advanced to the Championship bracket in the 200 yard freestyle, but finished 7th out of 8 with a time of 1:57.78. For the 200 yard medley relay, the Lancers finished 11th in the consolation heat with a time of 1:52.92.

Despite an unexpected turn in State results, Riordan said, “We were able to pull together at Conference and win. I think everyone did well at State and continued their success there.”

In 2010, the Lady Lancers found themselves with a first place finish at State, and the girls this year showed the same potential all year long. Last year, Lafayette took 5th overall, and was hoping to move up in the standings and bring home a trophy.

Unfortunately, the girls were unable to compete at their best in Friday’s prelims, making it very difficult to place well in final heats.

Stand-out athletes this season, Riordan and freshman Anna Luckenbach, entered the pool on Friday with qualifying times in the top eight for both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. Riordan was able to finish 6th in the 500-yard event as Luckenbach fell behind in the 15th spot. In the 50-yard freestyle, Katherine Lucken finished well in the consolation heat with a time of 24.77 seconds.
