Boys golf falls short at State

Despite a great effort, the boys varsity golf team couldn’t pull through at the recent Missouri state golf tournament in Cape Girardeau.

“After the first day, we felt like Michael Kanan would deal out some real damage, but the second day was so painful with the conditions of the course and the wind, in the end every one could only do the best that they could,” Assistant Coach Brian Reed said.

After a hard fought season, the varsity golf team was able to compete in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4 State Championship at The Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau. They competed against seven other schools from the area, including DeSmet, Chaminade and St. Louis University High School, along with individual golfers from the area who didn’t come with an entire school team.

Lafayette finished eighth out of the eight golf teams that attended the tournament, and Kanan finished the highest out of the Lafayette golfers who contended, finishing in a tie  for 47th place, with a final score of  169 strokes. Behind him, junior Conrad Maloney finished in 79th place with a score of  185 strokes, sophomore Riley Kastev finished in 82nd place with a score of 187 strokes and senior Jay Lee finished in 85th place, with a score of 189 strokes.

Though Lafayette didn’t do great, Reed is hoping that the team will tale their new experience and use it for the future.

” We do have a couple boys this year who will be coming back next year, so getting through the stress of knowing how the championship operates, with the conditions of the course and what not. They’ll step up as leaders and help their teammates play well,” Reed said.
