Girls volleyball advances to State
Competing for a third championship in a row, the girls volleyball team dominated in both Districts and Sectionals. The Lancers faced rival St. Josephs Academy last Saturday, Nov. 2 on Angel turf, shutting them down 2-0.
Two years ago, the girls clinched a State championship against Lee’s Summit West, repeating a second title against the Titans in 2012. For the first time in school history, the squad was able to go undefeated 80-0 last year. This season, the girls have only lost one match at the Missouri-Kansas Border War Tournament, but remained undefeated in dual matches.
Captains Lily Johnson, Maggie Scott and Jackie Scott stepped up as leaders after losing seven varsity seniors. Johnson leads the team in kills with 353 this season. Maggie dominates in assists, averaging 11.35 per game. Jackie has scored 171 points this year offensively, while defensively has 252 digs.
Several players have already decided to continue their volleyball careers into college. Johnson committed to Missouri State, Maggie to University of Oregon and Jackie to Western Kentucky. Senior Brenna Griffey chose McKendree University and junior Tori Roe committed to Oral Roberts.
The girls prepare for State competition this Friday, Nov. 8 in Cape Girardeau against 35-2 Park Hill South. The Panthers upset Lee’s Summit West in a tight three set match, winning 27-29, 25-20, 25-20. On the other side of the bracket, Marquette will face the Ozark Tigers. The championship match will take place on Sat., Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.
