So far this season, the varsity baseball team’s toughest opponent seems to have been Mother Nature. The Lancers have already had three games rained out — the season-opener against DeSmet and a home-away series against Marquette this past weekend – and have missed nearly a dozen practices to due wet field conditions.
Still, the weather’s greatest impact didn’t come until April 19 in a game against Parkway South (13-0,6-0), which leads the Suburban West. As the Lancers held a 6-2 lead early on, the game continued even as lightening was spotted nearby. By the time umpires decided to end the game in the sixth inning, the Patriots had taken an 8-6 lead. After cutting the lead to 8-7 in the top of the seventh, the Lancers walked off the field with no outs and a runner on third base.
“When you’re that pumped up, it’s disheartening. You feel like you’re going to win,” junior Eric Moser said.
Because the game reached the fifth inning, the result stood as official. The score was adjusted to 8-6 as the seventh inning had not been completed. Following that, the Lancers fell to the Patriots 6-4 on April 20. With the sweep, they dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in Conference play.
