Girls golf looks to repeat State finish

With hope of a repeat of last year’s 2nd place finish at State, the Lafayette Lady’s golf team earned themselves a bid to State after finishing 2nd at sectionals this past weekend.

The team’s journey was not without drama. The week prior at Districts, the team suffered a heartbreaking loss when both Marquette and Parkway West tied, taking up the two available team spots.

Lafayette’s only hope was to have at least four girls qualify individually, in order to be able to compete as a team at Sectionals. In order to qualify individually, players had to have the top 15 scores, not including the two teams that qualified.

All five members of the team qualified, keeping the hopes of advancing as a team alive.

At Sectionals, the team shot a score of 373, earning themselves a spot in State competition. Lafayette was able to beat the highly favorite Marquette Mustangs, who shot a 388 team score.

Lafayette also made history, becoming only the second team to qualify individually for Sectionals, and then qualify as a team for State.

State will be held in Jefferson City and will take place Oct. 21-22.
