Since middle school, freshman Starlet Aghajanyan has involved herself in volunteer work but has never helped out in the LHS Winter Carnival. That will soon change.
As both gyms will soon be filled up with kids from Pre-K to elementary school, Aghajanyan is in charge of touching up last minute decorations of her face paint and temporary tattoo stands as this will be her first time volunteering at the event.
“I really like face painting because it’s really fun and [the kids] get really happy,” she said.
This year, Lafayette will be hosting its annual Winter Carnival Saturday, Jan. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in both gyms. This event is a fundraiser for the freshman class and features a variety of fun activities for kids including games, face painting and a silent auction.
Admissions for kids and parents is free, however tickets cost $0.50 each and each ticket is one game or activity.
Volunteer registration for students is open up until Jan 25. All students are encouraged to volunteer with the event.
Although this is her first year volunteering for the Winter Carnival, Aghajanyan has involved herself in volunteer work since 8th Grade when she joined her school’s Student Council.
“I joined STUCO because I didn’t realize it was a thing when I first moved to Rockwood district,” she said.
As a current freshman, Aghajanya said she looks forward to participating in more volunteering opportunities such as these in the future.
This carnival isn’t just a first for Aghajanya, it will also be the first year Assistant Principal Natasha Fischer will be overseeing the carnival.
As a mom of three boys, Fischer has always enjoyed bringing her kids to the Winter Carnival in years past.
“My oldest is 8 and I think I brought my oldest when he was 2 and my youngest was just a baby, so I would say [we’ve been coming for] 6 years,” she said.
Even though she is overseeing the event this year, she is still planning on bringing her sons to this event again.
The carnival itself is based on volunteer work with the Lancer Parent Committee and student volunteers contributing the most. However, the carnival needs around 100-150 more student volunteers to help run the booths, games and run coat checks.
Students can sign up to volunteer through ParentSquare and StudentSquare. NHS and Key Club are also promoting this event for their members.
“We encourage the high school kids to participate and volunteer their hours,” Fischer said.
