On Jan. 27, The Lafayette High School Student Council (STUCO) will be hosting its annual blood drive. Taking place in the back gym, the drive will begin at 7:45 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m. To sign up for a time slot to donate, go here.

In order to give blood, donors must provide a valid form of ID and students 17 years of age or older are permitted to give blood without parental consent while those under 17 must provide a signed consent form. For a full list of eligibility requirements, click here.

The American Red Cross’s general requirements for donating blood are that the donor “be in good general health and feeling well, weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated blood in the last 56 days,” according to their website.

STUCO sponsor David Choate encourages people to sign up to donate.

“Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, and a student’s donation can save up to three lives. There is nothing more important than giving back, and signing up for the blood drive is an easy way for students to give back and make an important difference in someone’s life,” he said.

Participants have also been encouraged to drink plenty of water before their donation slot and some have been advised to take iron supplements afterward as a means of building up the iron that is lost during the donation process. For more information on iron loss and how to prevent side effects, click here.

As an incentive to participate in the event, The American Red Cross is also partnering with the NFL this January, during National Blood Donor Month, and those who donate between  Jan. 1-31, 2023, will automatically be entered to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona.

Additionally, those wishing to volunteer through STUCO can do so by filling out this form.
