For the 2023-2024 school year, students will be out of school before Memorial Day.

Director of Human Resources Tracey Edwards said that three student attendance days have been added back to the calendar so students can get out before Memorial Day.

“The state law is what caused us to rework the calendar a few years ago. We have known we wanted to try and get back to the pattern of out before Memorial Day since this law went into effect but it took a few years to rethink how we do it since we had to keep the same number of student attendance days and teacher contract days,” Edwards said.

Calendar Committee member Patricia Mabie said that teachers will have to report back a day earlier.

“Teachers will now do two Professional Development days over the summer, July to August, and will report back a day earlier in August in order to do the Curriculum day [which was] originally scheduled for the Tuesday after Labor Day,” Mabie said.

Senior Xander Moore said they don’t understand why Rockwood chose to start and end later into the year.

“It’s nice they have Memorial Day the latest school can go to, but starting in August and ending in June feels insulting,” Moore said.

The 2023-2024 school calendar were approved by the Board of Education on March 3, 2022. The revised calendar changes with school ending on May 24 are waiting to be approved by the board on Jan. 19.
