Students will find out on Oct. 15 if they were accepted into the National Honor Society (NHS). On Oct. 19, over 100 students will be officially inducted into the program from 7-8 p.m. in the Theater. 

NHS is a program exclusive to upperclassmen who have a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Brian Fish, the world language teacher and NHS sponsor, sent out an email to eligible juniors and seniors on Sept. 7.

“Juniors and seniors with a 3.5 GPA or above are invited to apply to be members of the Lafayette chapter of the NHS.  They complete an application process that asks them to reach out to three staff members to rate their strength of character, share evidence of at least two examples of past leadership and service and verify it with a provided email,” Fish said. 

Eligible students were also required to write an essay along with their application. If accepted, juniors and seniors are given the opportunity to apply for scholarships, participate in community projects and take part in additional leadership opportunities, according to the official NHS website. 

“NHS provides students the opportunity to share their strength of scholarship, character, leadership and service with their school, local or regional community,” Fish said.    

Senior Tom Classen, an NHS executive board member, enjoys being a part of the program.

“I decided to do NHS because community service is something that is so rewarding and I wanted to keep that aspect in my life throughout high school,” Classen said.
