ROTC collects clothing and books for Winter Shelter and Children of Cote Brilliante Elementary school
October 28, 2014
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (JROTC) is collecting adult winter clothing for the Adult Outreach Program, their Xavier Inn Emergency Winter Shelter at St. Louis University and Children of Cote Brilliante Elementary school for the 11th consecutive year. In previous years, ROTC collected children and adults clothes; however, Children of Cote requested only new or used childrens books. Clothing donations may include shirts, pants, coats, jackets, sweaters, gloves and all other seaosnable clothing. In addition to the books, Shop n’ Save donated the school supplies they were not able to sell in their store.
“It’s conservatively around $500 to $1000 worth of school supplies,” Colonel Berenc said.
All three levels of cheerleading will also be helping in this year’s project. At tonight’s junior varsity football game, the girls will have a table set up in the stadium where books can be brought it in. As a part of the JROTC program, the students are required to participate in 20 hours of community service per year which correlates to the honor cord and their grade. Every year, the project is very successful and this year is no different.
“Put it this way, if they have one book then it’s more than they had before. To me, it’s all about leadership and when you do things for other people you begin to interact with them and learn those interpersonal skills,” Berenc said.
On or before Oct. 29, donations can be brought to Rm. 162.
