On April 4, 2014, LHS officially began use of it’s new buzzing system to unlock school doors.

All Rockwood School District elementary and middle schools have installed and begun the use of the system, so the next step in this Rockwood safety program is to implement it in all high schools.

Rockwood Summit was the first high school to administer the program, which was installed over Spring Break, and LHS is the next. By the end of spring, all Rockwood high schools are expected to have the alarms fully up and running.

The system was finalized and installed on April 1, 2014, but did not begin use until April 4 in order to insure the program was properly working. From now on, all school doors will be locked at 8:16 a.m. However, the Welcome Center door will reopen at 3:05 p.m.

Between the school hours, the only access into LHS will be through the Welcome Center or back loading dock by means of the buzzing system. Visitors will be required to ring an alarm and hall monitors will see them through a camera and approve or deny their entry.

Principal John Shaughnessy said, “ I understand the need for safety, but it (the buzzing system) is particularly cumbersome in high schools due to the variety of schedules: students in tech, CCE students, people coming and going for community service, senior option, and so many other reasons people come in a out at various times. It is beneficial for the safety of students, but it will slow down the process.”
