Crash re-enactment raises awareness about dangers of drunk driving

Each year Rockwood School District and the Wildwood Fire Department put on a simulated car crash to rise awareness of drunk driving. Students, as well as the police and the fire departments, participated by acting in the skit. Police cars, fire trucks and even a helicopter was used to emphasize the act.

“Its a good reminder and a opportunity to educate our students and community about making good choices and staying safe and show how many people are impacted by a single event, its not just one person it’s one family,” Assistant Principle Karen Calcaterra said.

In previous years only juniors and seniors were allowed to go, but this year sophomores were allowed to attend because some have their licenses.

“This year is a little bit different then last year because it was only available to juniors and seniors [previously], but we met as a administrative team and said we have sophomores that drive so we wanted to extend it to anyone who is at the age to drive,” Calcaterra said.

The cast was composed of seniors Jack DeLine (dead person), Jordan Miller (victim), Madison Kesselring (victim) and Connor Stephens (drunk driver) and Chris O’Conner (victim), junior.

The skit showed the actions the policemen must do to ensure all the people survive the crash. They tore open the car doors and put the injured students on stretchers and wheeled them into an ambulance. They then took the deceased student and placed his body on the ground and his mother came over to identify the body.

“The overall grand scheme is [that] I want you to be shocked into not making a bad decision. Most people focus on not drinking and driving but the message is don’t be around anyone who is drunk. You make a decision about who you are around you,” Chief Fireman Beirne said.
