Lydia’s House provides an opportunity for abused women and children

Last week, from Sept. 23-27, Redefining Beautiful held a donation drive for Lydia’s House, a St. Louis based organization that provides transitional housing for abused women and their children.

According to their website, Lydia’s House “is the only transitional housing program in Eastern Missouri that is specifically for battered and abused women and their children.” They have 36 confidentially located furnished apartments for families to recover and get back on their feet after an abusive situation.

Unlike many other shelters, Lydia’s House doesn’t have a 30-90 day policy. Rather, they provide transitional housing for up to 24 months, or two years.

While Lydia’s House works mainly to help women and their children restart their lives after abuse, they also emphasize spiritual growth and healing of the women and children. Their website says that their goal is to “help women get in touch with their own unique spiritual self and to offer resources and practices that can help them to nurture and care for their own spiritual self.”

Lydia’s House additionally provides each family with an advocate who is specialized in guiding them through recovery.

Donation items were collected every day last week during lunch shifts. Donation items included household items, cleaning supplies, toiletries, children’s needs, community supplies and gift cards.
