At the 2023 Prom, Class of 2023 graduates Joe Marlo and Will Barry stay at the edge of the main floor to do their dancing. Because the small dance floor was the most crowded area, many students gathered around the edges with friends or in small groups.

Staff to participate in 2012 Relay for Life event

The 2012 Relay for Life will be held June 1-2 at Rockwoood Summit High School. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and closing ceremonies take place at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.  The event is from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

According to the Relay for Life home page, “Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.”

Lafayette has its own team participating at Relay for Life alongside 48 other Rockwood teams.

This is not the first year the Lafayette staff have been a part of this race. According to team member and retired Lafayette math teacher Sue Curtis,  it is the fifth year LHS has been part of this event which has been going on for 12 years.

The 21 members of the Lafayette team will take turns walking the Rockwood Summit track to help raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

The team captain, guidance secretary Donna Hagemeier, will camp overnight and continue walking.

Although the team name is “Lafayette Faculty and Staff,” anyone who wants to join can contact Hagemeier. However, students under 18, will need a signed permission form.

If you want to be a part of this event but you don’t want to necessarily walk the track, there are many volunteer opportunities at the event such as handing out water or directing traffic.

Along with walking the track, the team has been raising money as a part of their donation to the American Cancer Society.

The teams’ goal is $4,000 and so far the team has raised a total of $2,309.25 by doing various activities. One of these such activities was holding a bake sale for staff members on May 4.

Curtis and retired math teacher Cindy Slama made treats including  gooey butter cookies and other assorted pastries. In addition Einstein’s bagels donated items.

Also, Friday, May 11 is Rockwood “Power of Purple Day.” Students and staff are encouraged to wear purple to increase support and awareness of Rockwood’s Relay For Life event.
