New club LASA will celebrate Asian cultures

The first meeting of the Lafayette Asian Student Alliance (LASA) took place Dec. 9.

The meeting took place in sponsor Jay Buck’s room, Room 122, at 3:10 p.m. and was open to all students , regardless of ethincity.

The first meeting focused on member introductions and setting goals for the year.

LASA will give students the opportunity to celebrate and share their culture with themselves and others at Lafayette. They hope to build tolerance about diverse religions, beliefs and cultures.

Indian, Chinese, Pakistani, Japanese and various other Asian countries’ cultures will be discussed.

Buck said, “Within the continent of Asia there are so many diverse beliefs and cultures, so I hope students will have a chance to teach people about their cultures and also learn about other cultures.”

Another main focus of the group will be to build tolerance about diverse cultures. “Young people are usually much more tolerant of different cultures. As each generation grows up, we teach our children to be tolerant also, and it spreads as time goes on.” Buck said. Promoting this tolerance will help to celebrate the diversity at our school.

Although the group is unsure of their plans for the year, they hope to have several activity days during 2nd semester, including a culture day where students can bring in food and a field trip to a Buddhist or Hindu temple.
