You may recognize her when passing in the halls, but not really know the real Alex Dederer. She has played many character including this year Meg in Leading Ladies and Amber in Hairspray, but the real Dederer is more than just one of these roles.

Alex moved here the summer before her sophomore year, and reveals, “moving was one of the hardest things that I’ve had to go through and it was hard starting sophomore year and not knowing anyone it was really difficult”.

Dederer was able to make the transition smoother by relying heavily on God, and realizing that while moving is hard that everything happens for a reason.

“I’m very close to God and that just really got me through it and leaning on him,” Dederer said.

Dederer was able to quickly transition into Lafayette making friends with similar beliefs and ideals in just the first week of school. Through these friends she was able to find different youth groups that gave her a safe and inviting atmosphere.

These different groups and activities “really filled my happiness and love for this school and state,” Dederer said.

Soon after starting school Dederer became involved in yet another activity–theatre. Starting the fall of her sophomore year she has been apart of almost every major play or musical since then.

‘Here I have been in Gloria, The Adam’s Family,The Odd Couple, Hairspray and Leading Ladies.
In total I’ve been in 13 shows in all,” Dederer said.

These plays and musicals are not merely just a hobby for Dederer they are helping to get closer and closer to her ultimate dream of becoming a star on Broadway. While Dederer admits it is a big dream, she is passionate about this and will continue to work to achieve her goal.

Dederer’s personality is far from many of her characters. Her drive to achieve may remind you of her role as Amber, but the ways that she tries to reach the top is much different. In fact, the part she most identifies with was her role as Meg in Leading Ladies.

“We’re both very sympathetic people, and Meg didn’t want to go out of her comfort zone and try anything new; she was scared of what other people might think. But then it showed her blossoming and becoming who she really was and then she wasn’t afraid to be who she really is, which was kinda what happened when I came to school here,” Dederer said.

Through her time at Lafayette, Dederer has changed to be more confident and find her way through both her belief in God and her great friends that she was made here.
