When it comes to second hand stores like Goodwill, there is a right way to go about it. If shopped successfully, thrift stores and Goodwill can save you a ton of money and provide ample entertainment as well.
Following these handy tips and tricks will save you a lot of time and heartache when you are diving into bargain bins and sifting through racks of grandma skits.
- Keep in mind the Golden Rule of Goodwill shopping. Never buy mystery stains, never buy undergarments (unless they are still packaged) and never ever buy swimwear.
- Try not to go into a Goodwill with a specific item in mind, or you will be disappointed 99 percent of the time. Instead, go in with the mantra “I may not find what I’m looking for. I am ready to be surprised.” Keep in mind that Goodwill is not driven by supply and demand, but instead, by donations.
- Think quirky. If you’re clothes shopping at Goodwill, this is a good time for snakeskin pants, bold patterns, ancient tuxedoes, lacy bizarreness, idiosyncratic neckties and flowing summery dresses. If that’s not for you, maybe this is a good time to look for a Halloween costume.
- As a rule of thumb, the better the location and cleanliness levels of the bathrooms of a Goodwill, the worse the selection. The best-stocked Goodwills are found in the seediest places, as they are the least picked over.
- Have a treasure hunt. At Goodwill you can find old video game consoles, bizarre knick-knacks, empty kegs, freaky candle holders, nostalgic collectibles, ratty dream catchers and sometimes, sewing machines from the 1800s.
- Shop off season if you can. While some locations try to stock in-season items to go with the season, like skirts during spring, while others are spottier in their stocking. Think ahead. Even if you don’t need a winter jacket in the middle of July, you might be a little chilly come wintertime.
- Buy canvases and artwork. Whether you’re looking to spice up your room with an abstract action painting from the 80’s or you’re looking for some funky prints, Goodwill is the place to find cheap one-of-a-kind artwork. Or it’s great for finding super-cheap canvas and frames.
- Most importantly, always keep a healthy sense of humor and a sense of optimism. Maybe you’ll come away empty handed, but then again, maybe you’ll strike metaphorical gold. Happy Goodwill Hunting.
