Beginning this year, senior Emily Perkins chose to enroll in a ceramics class and found an interesting new hobby.
“I’ve never tried it before so I thought it would be a different type of art class,” Perkins said.
In class, she has created multiple vases and bowls, but her favorite creation is a Spongebob model.
“Currently, I’m pretty excited about making a raven,” she said. “The best thing about ceramics is that you can make things that you can use.”
To make a ceramic bowl or model requires clay, a kiln, ceramics glaze and a brush. Any of which can bought at a local craft store.
“First, you have to sketch out your idea. Then, look at the piece as a whole and see what will make it look best,” Perkins explained.
Although she enjoys her new hobby, mastering the technique of modeling is the hardest part of ceramics.
