Since 5thgrade, sophomore Lucas Shapland has been advancing his way through the different levels of Boy Scouts, and has achieved the highest rank a scout can.
“I became an Eagle Scout on October 22, 2008,” Shapland said.
It takes much dedication and time, and the completion of one large project, to become an Eagle Scout.
“I created two water-proof wheelchairs for Babler State Park and repaired a third one. It was for a summer camp that had handicapped kids. Some of them don’t get to go in the pool, so I decided to help them out by creating water-proof wheelchairs,” Shapland said.
He explained, “Babler had a pre-existing wheelchair that needed repair so I thought that I might as well make some news ones and repair the old one.”
Shapland not only enjoys the honor of being an Eagle Scout, but has a general love for scouts in general. He has participated in many scout-related activities over the years.
“I have done a lot, I can say that,” he said. “One of the outings I like a lot is the skiing outing where we go to Wisconsin and ski for a couple of days. It’s pretty fun.”
Though he loves to have fun with fellow members, his favorite part of scouts is the community service aspect.
“I still think the most fun is actually going out and doing a service project because you get to go out and do work while helping other people,” Shapland said.
As for his continuation with scouting, Shapland has a specific goal he wants to accomplish by the end of high school.
“I will probably continue this throughout high school. I have a deal with my dad that if I get 81 merit badges than he will pay me for to go to Sweden,” Shapland said.
