Over the years, Lafayette’s musicians and several other talented students have been able to perform at the annual Coffee House to showcase their skills in a comfortable outlet.

However, this 10-year tradition has received a bit of a post-pandemic makeover this year. This year, the Acoustic Variety Show will take place Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Theater.

Now re-branded as the Acoustic Variety Show, guitar teacher Traci Bolton said the event was in need of some revision. Originally, the talent show was a more informal “coffee house” format that took place in the Commons where coffee was served to the audience. But, even after the event returned following the COVID-19 pandemic, the coffee aspect never came back.

“It has morphed into different variations of a variety show/poetry, acoustic covers and original music,” Bolton said.

To decide who got into the line-up of the show, tryouts were held during AcLab.

From seeing different acts throughout the years, Bolton said her favorite acts are the ones with originals.

“The students who take ideas and put them together and create a song. It’s their thing and their song. I just love that,” Bolton said.

Senior Kyle Dean has performed in the show for three years. This year, Dean will be in three different acts.

“I’m doing the Habernaro Hawaiian Rolls with [juniors] Owen Woody and Ayden Mall. I’m doing Tuesday Night Rock Band. We open and close the show. I’m doing an Arabian metal project thing I’m working on with [seniors] Logan Jaycox, Jon Rattenborg and Mall,” Dean said.

Having acts for the Acoustic Variety Show for the past three years, Dean said his favorite part is being able to perform for his family.

“Just being able to go out and play for my family. I’m [usually] in my basement all the time and I actually get to perform for them,” Dean said.

Tickets will be sold at the door, $5 for individual tickets or $10 for a group of any size.

“The only stipulation is everybody has to show up together so you enter together,” Bolton said. “Your group can be three people or 30 people as long as you’re coordinated enough to come in together.”

The money from ticket sales goes toward supplies for the different performance groups Bolton sponsors including Tuesday Night Rock Band and the Jam Bands.
