The Lancers go back to defend against the Ladue attack. Eddie Galo and Matt Graves go back to make sure their men are well defended.

The Water Polo team this year has struggled throughout, but have much to look forward to for the rest of the season. Their record may only be 2-9 in all competitions, but that includes a brutal schedule with several close games and several top-tier teams.

Their most recent game, against Ladue (8-1), may have had a final box-score of 11-2, but the team had several positives to take away from the game. The team was getting into several scoring opportunities but struggled to score. Whether it was the solid goal-keeping, Ladue’s airtight defense or the goalposts, the Lancers just could not score. On the defensive end, a Ladue team with several more swimmers able to rotate in and out were able to stay relatively fresh and out-swim the Lancers. For Lafayette, only two people were there to rotate in and out at once, where Ladue had several more. Also on the defensive end, goalie Alex Mick made 11 saves, many of which were at point-blank range and difficult saves. Ladue slithered their way straight to goal with their physicality, speed and ball movement, but even they sometimes struggled to capitalize because of Mick’s performance.

Earlier in the season, they had a win over Fort Zumwalt West where Matt Graves was able to score six goals in the 10-8 win.

Thus far, the team has faced the top ranked team in SLUH, third ranked Parkway West, fourth ranked Ladue and sixth ranked DeSmet, so the toughest parts of the team’s schedule is out of the way.

The team’s next game is at Pattonville on April 10 at 5:30 p.m.

In preparation for that game, Mick said, “We definitely need to work on offense. The last four or five games, we have not played very well on offense. We’ve had opportunities, we’re not capitalizing. Defensively, we need to be more consistent.”
