Lafayette hosts STEM night to promote sciences
Spearheaded by senior Jojo Lu, the idea for STEM night originated from some of his missed opportunities as a sophomore and a junior.
“There were a lot of STEM-related things that I missed in my years of high school, that I wish I had known about earlier,” Lu said. “I don’t want other sophomores and juniors to not take advantage of these amazing opportunities, so I though STEM Night would be a great idea.”
Lu also noticed that, although STEM was garnering much attention at the district level, it had yet to be incorporated into everyday life at school.
“I saw there were specific nights for other activities, sports and clubs, so I thought ‘Why isn’t there something dedicated to science?’”
Lu is excited to see the hard work that he put into the event pay off. Many of the leading science-related companies in the St. Louis area will be present, such as Pfizer and Monsanto as well as some universities, such as Washington University St. Louis.
“There are going to be live demonstrations, DNA extractions, robots, drones, a virtual reality simulator, and lots of presentations on the different opportunities around STL for young scientists,” Lu said. “I would really love for a lot of students to be there so that the companies know that there is STEM interest in the LHS community.”
STEM night will take place on Thursday, Nov 9, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Commons.

Senior Jojo Lu, organizer of STEM Night, holds up a flyer for Thursday’s event sponsoring STEM education at Lafayette.
