Head Coach Zach Young has turned the girls volleyball team into a powerhouse. After serving his fifth year as a head coach, he holds a incredible 164-21-8 record.

“It’s special not only for me, but also for our program and school. It is truly a team effort,” Young said. “While I am honored to receive this award, it should have all of the players names as well as my assistant coaches Sue Tillery, Steve Burkard and Kim Aschoff listed right next to mine. We’re very proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the last few years and with team success also comes individual awards.”

The Lady Lancers won their sixth consecutive volleyball State title this past year. Lafayette now holds the record for the most consecutive State titles won in Missouri. After five years with the team, Young has had many good memories with the team through all the struggles and triumphs.

“First and foremost is getting to work with some of the best coaches around in Sue Tillery, Steve Burkard and Kim Aschoff. We have become life long friends. Obviously the State championships have been special and is probably the answer you’re looking for,” Young said. “However, what holds higher value than the wins are the relationships we’ve built with the amazing people that have played in our program. We’ve had a blast year in and year out trying to reach our goal each year of improvement and to be playing our best at the end of each season. We’re also very fortunate to have such support from our Activities Director Steve Berry and Principal John Shaughnessy and his administration team. I consider myself one of the luckiest coaches around to work with such great people at a special place like Lafayette.”

Young will surely enjoy this offseason after another successful season and this national award. Avid girls volleyball fans will have to wait another eight months before they get to see Young and the team take another crack at a State title.
